Terra Sigillata (terra sig)

Terra Sigillata (terra sig) – is a solution of very fine stoneware clay suspended in water. One or more coats are applied to the air dried pieces and then hand polished to a very smooth shiny finish.  The pieces are then fired to bisque temperature. Terra sig acts as an absorbent layer that captures the fumes generated by the applied colorant and organic material once the piece reaches temperature in the gas fired Raku kiln. Terra sig pieces are the first step for foil saggar, two-step, naked raku and horsehair pieces. Terra sig does not make any of the pieces waterproof because it is not a glaze which seals the pot.
